 Nata come insediamento ligure (il nome antico Luca deriva forse da una radice celto-ligure luk- col significato di luogo paludoso) e sviluppatasi come città romana a partire dal 180 AC, nel VI secolo, Lucca divenne la capitale del ducato longobardo della Tuscia per poi svilupparsi nel XII secolo come comune e poi repubblica.
